801st Anniversary Raffle

Franciscans Celebrate Eight
Centuries of a Gospel Way of Life
1209 – 2009

Eight centuries ago, in the year 1209, a dozen shabbily dressed men managed to gain entry to the Papal Court. They were seeking the approval of Pope Innocent III for what their leader, a young man names Francis from the town of Assisi, called a life according to the pattern of the Gospel.

Despite initial misgivings, the Pope did grant Francis’ petition to lead a radical Gospel life...thus launching the Franciscan movement, the largest and most popular religious movement in all of Catholic history.

Francis and his brothers abandoned all their possessions, deliberately choosing to follow the humility and poverty of our Lord, Jesus Christ by becoming “lesser ones, subject to all.”

Last year Franciscan Friars celebrated the 800th Anniversary of their Order’s founding. They are challenging themselves to deepen their fraternal relationship and spiritual lives, to strengthen collaboration with their lay partners and other Franciscan entities, and to focus their apostolic mission on peacemaking, the evangelization of young adults, and serving the alienated, the immigrant and the poor.
